What makes a top holiday affiliate program offer? Okay, obviously it’s something people will buy, but there’s just a bit more to it. In this article I’m going to discuss one new program and why I think it’s spot on perfect for marketing this holiday season. You may end up thinking I’m nuts, but you may just end up thinking about holiday offers in a new light.
The merchant for this exercise is SteakBrands.com. Okay, you might be wondering just why branding irons for steaks makes sense for the holidays, so bear with me while I explain.
They’re New - This is a new program and one offering a product line that relatively untouched in the affiliate space. That means less competition on SEO, less competition on PPC and a merchant that’s eager to work with affiliates to build their program.
Let me repeat, less competition. If you’re one of only a small handful promoting, even an amateur SEO monkey could hit top 10 spots, maybe not by Christmas, but certainly in time for… Heck, read on and see what you might be in time for.
They’re Eager - Didn’t I just say that in the point above? Yes, but I wanted to be more specific. Newer merchants often go the extra mile to support and work with affiliates. In this case, I’ve been in touch with SteakBrands on a few points and they have been MORE than cooperative, even going so far as to remove the toll-free number from their header. How many other holiday offers do you have that are really making an effort to make their program better meet YOUR needs?
The Offer Covers Overlapping Seasons - A lot of holiday affiliate offers cover one season and fade away until the following year. That doesn’t excite me. What does excite me is an offer that keeps coming back season after season. You might not think of steak branding irons as the most perfect Christmas offer on the face of it, but you know ALL of your surfers know somebody who loves to grill, so there’s certainly a market at Christmas time. I have a golf nut on my list, and despite the cold wet
Then consider all the tailgate parties going on at college games around the country. College football season is yet another prime time for this die hard offer, and yet again you know that ALL of your surfers know at least one college football fan(atic) and some of them may be themselves. If you lived in the right town, how hard would it be to print up business cards with your URL and pay some kids to hit every tailgate party at every home game? College papers take advertising, how expensive can that be? Alumni association websites, Myspace groups, etc, etc.
Next comes, you guessed it, summer grilling season! With work picnics, softball leagues, the 4th of July and every other excuse we can come up with to fire up the barbecue grill and burn some meat, summer is the perfect time to be pitching unique items for the grill!
The seasons just keep coming and that is a lot more attractive to me than Santa jumpers or nifty ornaments… Did I forget to mention Father’s day?
The Right Price - A good gift offer needs to cover the right price range. Too high and you price the bulk of the gift buyers out of the market. Too low and you won’t make beans no matter how many you sell. We all have a budget and gift price points vary by who’s buying and who for - parents buying for kids, kids for parents, nieces and nephews for aunts and uncles, siblings, etc. These are priced just right for Moms and Dads to buy as secondary presents or stocking stuffers, for adult siblings to buy one another and for kids to get for parents. Perfect price makes a big holiday difference.
By the way, why does MS Word think I should’ve used “whom’s” instead of “who’s” up there?
Solid Commissions - 15% is solid, especially when you consider that less competition and decent price point. It’s more than you’ll likely get for selling holiday airfare…
Decent Network - ShareASale has it’s quirks and there are things that downright bug me, but they are also affiliate centric, anti-parasite, BHO, etc and manage to garner an amazing amount of affiliate loyalty and trust.
Okay, so I started off saying I was going to explain what makes a good holiday affiliate program offer and ended up explaining what made one offer particularly good (SteakBrands - I know, shameless!), but look at what you can take away and apply when you consider any program:
· Amount of competition · Programs eagerness to work with and for affiliates · Multiple seasons per year or just one (this is a big one for anything seasonal) · Gift giving price range · Potential commissions at that price range· Can you trust the program, network, tracking, etc
Anyway, that’s it for now. Best of luck with your affiliate marketing this holiday season!
